Love this! When we did our 50 best restaurants feature at Chicago magazine last year I got some flak for having zero restaurants that had opened in the last year. We liked many of the new restaurants but none were ready for the list of the very top.
Love this piece. I work in a restaurant, and also for a mag that names the "best restaurants" in the city. The "Best tried and true" list is my favourite, because it features the restaurants that have been around forever, that people return to again and again, that hold special meaning in the lives of SO many people.
This is a wonderful piece and it’s led me to reflect on the restaurants that I have at phases in my life chosen to be loyal to, and why, even in a big foodie city like Houston.
The restaurant industry was destroyed 5 years ago, long road back, and nothing will taste good until the people who murdered Anthony Bourdain swing from the gallows
You're motivating me to do broader research when I'm looking for a place go. But I do really like D Magazine's list of 50 best Dallas restaurants. It's updated every 6 months (which seems like a lot to me). I haven't done deep research, but I think it's a good combination of new and established. I am sure Brian could tell us exactly which is the oldest on the list. I also really like the column he writes to introduce each new update. Most recently he wrote about the restauraunts he actually thinks about when he's hungry and how they are mostly at the bottom of list because it's not likely that you eat at the *best* places regularly. He's also pretty transparent about how it's compiled (though I do see evidence of excess coverage of chefs he appears to be friendly with). https://www.dmagazine.com/frontburner/2025/01/our-updated-50-best-restaurants-list-is-more-helpful-than-ever/
