A List of MN Restaurants to Visit Right Now
THE SOLIDARITY LIST
The Solidarity List
This is a list of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops that have been publicly posting in solidarity after the murder of Renee Good, or “all are welcome except ICE” sentiments. This is designed to help Minnesotans make choices on community gathering places during this time.
This is community-sourced information that I independently verified.
To get a restaurant added to this list, DM beyondbeurreblanc on Instagram with a screenshot of the post the restaurant made. I will continue to update this daily for the time being.
Our next update is 1:00pm on Monday January 12th.
Not able to visit these restaurants right now? Amplify them <3.
Omissions
Some restaurants are avoiding posting content like this but are still in solidarity. Some owners that I talked to off-the-record did not post this kind of content and are driving their staff to work to keep them safe, for example. Some owners told me that immigrant staff members asked them not to post publicly. This list is not exhaustive of every restaurant that is a safe place to gather or that deserves your support. It’s a starting place.
Every business owner has to make choices about the safety of their team based on their unique position. I talked with a significant number of immigrant-owned restaurants with “ICE not welcome here” signs on the door but no public post before publishing this piece. Based on those conversations, I am only including restaurants with public posts, not restaurants with signs on the door. You’ll notice that means a lot of immigrant-owned restaurants are missing.
I’m actively encouraging you to go to an immigrant-owned restaurant this week regardless of if they are included on this list.
Every day, for the time being, I’ll be posting one immigrant-owned business that could really use people’s support. Find it on my Instagram Stories.
If you are a restaurant with anti-ICE signs on the door without a public post and want to be included on this list, please DM me on Instagram from your official Instagram account.
If you want to be removed from this list, DM me on Instagram as well.
VAGUE STATEMENTS
I omitted restaurants with “all are welcome here” statements or other vague statements.
OWNER STATEMENTS
While some owners have posted on their personal pages, I’m specifically looking for posts from the restaurant, because restaurants are powered by immigrant labor–and an owner posting personally is different from taking a stand as a business.
ETHICS
This, along with all my writing, follows my code of ethics. Some restaurants that posted solidarity posts do not qualify to be listed here based on that (i.e. union busting, pending sexual assault/harassment cases, etc). You can view my code of ethics here.
An Incomplete List of Places to Gather in the Twin Cities
If restaurants posted a “hard post” on their grid, it’s linked here. If they posted on their stories, I linked their site. If I was informed that they posted on their stories but myself or Phoebe did not personally see it, we did not include it. All of the information below has been independently verified by both of us.
Bymore Supermercado (providing free food delivery for those impacted by ICE)
Colonial Market and Restaurant (providing free food delivery for those impacted by ICE)
Loma Bonita (providing free food delivery for those impacted by ICE)
Valerie’s Carniceria (providing free food delivery for those impacted by ICE)
For Out of Towners
If you buy a pizza at Wrecktangle and put in the notes that you won’t be picking it up with a message of solidarity, they will make two pizzas and donate them to local community members who need them.
You can also make a donation to Joyce Uptown Foodshelf or directly to MN Ice Watch via their Venmo as well as MIRAC. MN Ice Watch also has a lot of GoFundMe’s linked in their Link Tree.
Keep amplifying what you see here. We need you.
Special Credits
I want to thank Rappy18, KristeninMN, DLukeNelson, Minne.eats, and JDHovland for sending me over their own lists they were maintaining. Thank you, as always, to BBB’s behind-the-scenes superstar, Phoebe, who helped verify this list and spent all day on Friday doing this work with me.
To the Press
As a reminder to the press, just because I am indie doesn’t mean this isn’t individual, unique reporting, so if you use it as a source, credit it as such.
A Pause in Standard Content
Dry January content will begin again later in January.
